Sign Language: A Tool to Help Children Engage in the Learning Process
As teachers continually search for new ways to engage their students in the learning process, they found out that the use of sign language brought many benefits to the learners. It was noticed that this tool enhances the learning of the children by bringing visual, auditory, and kinesthetic feedback.
In ISMILE, the teachers learned the basic sign language during the personal development program and explored the possibility of using this tool as part of the class routine wherein students learn familiar sign languages introduced in songs and when learning the English language wherein words are learned paired with signs for multi-sensorial leaning. It is amazing to note children’s attention on the way the teacher’s hands move stimulating their interest to imitate the signs modeled to them. Teaching in this way, aids children to learn faster when they hear, see and feel the words they are learning.
