From its inception, ISMILE has recognized the profound importance of shaping the hearts and minds of our young learners during their Golden Age. Our educational philosophy places character building at its core, intricately woven into our eclectic program to foster the holistic development of each child.
At ISMILE, we believe that instilling core values such as kindness, honesty, thankfulness, and respect during these formative years provides a moral compass that guides children through life’s challenges, leading them toward a purposeful and upright life.
ISMILE’s character-building program is designed to be both engaging and impactful, extending lessons far beyond the classroom. One of the primary strategies isour Monthly Character Focus. Each month, we introduce a specific character trait that becomes the highlight of our discussions and activities. Paired with a memory verse, these character traits are explored and discussed during daily Circle Time. Students reflect on the characteristic of the trait and how they apply to their lives, with teachers using teachable moments throughout the day to reinforce these lessons. This consistent exposure and application help students internalize these values, integrating them into their daily behavior both at school and at home.
Character building extends into our weekly Chapel sessions, where we bring the month’s character focus to life through creatively prepared skits performed by our teachers. These skits illustrate the character trait in relatable scenarios, providing students with a clearer understanding of how to apply these lessons in their own lives. Chapel Time also includes moments of prayer and worship, fostering a sense of community and connection with God while providing opportunities for personal reflection.
At ISMILE, we view parents as crucial partners in their children’s educational journey, especially in character building. We strive to collaborate with parents by offering parenting strategies that reinforce the values taught at school. Regular communication through Storypark, parenting talks, and invitations to Chapel sessions help parents understand and support the character-building efforts in school.
At home, parents can model these practical strategies to their children:
- Model Positive Behavior: Consistently demonstrate gentleness, patience, kindness, and respect to set a good example.
- Promote Effective Communication: Use positive language and practice active listening.
- Foster Empathy and Responsibility: Help children understand others’ feelings and assign age-appropriate tasks.
- Teach Gratitude: Celebrate achievements, emphasize effort, and discuss what you’re thankful for regularly.
- Learn from Mistakes: Encourage children to view mistakes as opportunities for growth and resilience.
By aligning efforts between home and school, we create a consistent environment where children can practice and internalize these values, guided by supportive parents.
With the strong foundation of good character values and the fear of the Lord instilled at ISMILE, we can expect our children to grow into compassionate and responsible individuals. They will become confident leaders who act with integrity, guided by a solid spiritual grounding. Their respect for others and a heart for service will enable them to be positive contributors to society. Shaped by kindness, honesty, and gentleness, they will approach life with peace and grace, continually seeking to learn and grow. ISMILE children are poised to become well-rounded, morally upright adults who make a meaningful impact on the world.
We are grateful to God for the privilege of shaping ISMILE children during their formative years. As educators and role models, we embrace and demonstrate the virtues we teach, striving to be shining examples for our students. As Matthew 5:16 reminds us, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven.” This guiding principle reflects our commitment to nurturing character and fostering a brighter future for all our students.
